slavery.

today is 1.11.11, otherwise known as national human trafficking awareness day. if you've been following my blog, facebook and twitter for some time, you already KNOW how this issue is important for me.

i absolutely HATE human trafficking.

last year, my son and i participated in SCTNow's awareness walk. you can read about that here and here.

there are no words to describe how disgusted i am with this crime. here are some facts about human trafficking to make you aware of this inhumane activity of modern-day slavery.
  • There are more than 30 million slaves in the world today.
  • The average age of a trafficked child is 12.
  • Over 27 million men, women and children are being bought, sold and tortured in a a world of human slavery.  Children as young as 3 years old are subjected to a cruel lifestyle of selling their bodies.  The problem in America is on the rise, and mass public events, like the Super Bowl, are prime opportunities for human trafficking to take place. Super Bowl XLV is less than one month away; thousands of football fans will join together in Dallas, Texas to cheer on their favorite team. Though the two competing football teams have yet to be selected for the big game, human traffickers–with a money making mentality– are pre-selecting women and children who will be forced to sell their bodies for sexual purposes.  The Super Bowl, according to Texas Attorney General Abbott, “is one of the biggest human trafficking events in the United States.” - stop child trafficking now
  • 600,000 – 800,000 people are bought and sold across international borders each year; 50% are children, most are female. The majority of these victims are forced into the commercial sex trade. – U.S. Department of State, 2004, Trafficking in Persons Report, Washington, D.C.
  • Over 2 million children are currently enslaved around the world, including every one of the 50 United States.
  •  this system of trafficking human beings for profit generates 32 billion dollars a year – more than Starbucks, Google & Nike combined. - elora nicole
  • Today slavery encompasses more than just servitude in a home or picking crops.  Today – young girls (and boys) are kidnapped for prostitution.  Women, men, children are forced to labor for at most pennies a day in fields and factories – so you and I can pay less for a candy bar or  t-shirt.  Children are kidnapped to become soldiers. - prudence landis
